There are many reasons why you should send your child to CELC for preschool! We like to think of it as "The CELC Advantage". Here are several of the outstanding features of the preschool program at Canyon Early Learning Center:
1. The qualifications of all of our staff
All of our teachers have earned permits authorizing them to work in a preschool setting. In addition to our preschool staff, we also have a speech therapist, occupational therapist, school psychologist, adaptive PE teacher, and special education teachers on site who help us with identifying and serving students with special needs. Since we know high quality teachers and aides create a high quality program, we seek to hire and retain only the best candidates we can find!
2. Continual training opportunities for staff members
All staff members are encouraged to attend professional workshops and conferences whenever possible. Many opportunities are provide to our staff at no cost through the Los Angeles County Office of Education and the California Preschool Instructional Network. Staff development, team planning and instructional support opportunities are how staff continue to grow professionally.
3. Connections with elementary schools
To create a seamless transition for our students going to kindergarten we have articulation meetings with the kindergarten teachers. Preschool parents are encouraged to visit the elementary sites for Open House each spring and we have a parent transition meeting towards the end of the year. We also send written records of student progress to the elementary sites.
4. High quality curriculum
Our teachers use the High Scope philosophy by which children are active learners and are challenged and supported by adults. Children develop plans, carry out their ideas and reflect on what they learned. Within that philosophy, we provide high-quality, developmentally appropriate activities designed stimulate a child’s natural curiosity about the world and how it works. We focus on pre-reading skills such as letter recognition, comprehension of text, and the pure enjoyment of hearing a good story. For pre-writing skills, we provide ample opportunities to write and give direct instruction on how to write their names. In the area of math, our focus is on counting, size concepts (small, medium, large) and making patterns. In science, our students learn about the weather, farm animals, physical properties (sink or float) and staying healthy. In social studies, we talk about community helpers and safety rules. In addition to all of this, we teach the children how to negotiate with others when we have a problem and how to be a good friend. Preschool is a very busy place, as you can see! There is a lot of learning going on!
5. Emphasis on the whole child
Perhaps what makes our preschool program stand out above the rest, however, is that we are cognizant of the need to balance work and play with our three and four year old students. "Developmentally appropriate" is a term you will often hear from our teachers. This phrase simply means that we teach preschool children in the way they learn the best…through playful activities. We use music, games, hands-on activities, and art to help our students learn and grow each day. Our classrooms are alive and bustling with activity from start to finish, but we know that through their play, our students are enjoying the learning process and developing a love for learning.
